Factors can cause stroke
An ischemic stroke is caused by blockage of blood flow to the brain by a blood clot. The accumulation of plaque on the artery walls (the atherosclerosis or "hardening of the arteries" in common parlance) is an underlying cause of many ischemic strokes.

A stroke is characterized by a sudden loss of brain function due to an interruption of blood flow to the brain as a result of ischemic stroke (caused by the formation of a blood clot) or cerebrovascular bleeding ( caused by the rupture of a vessel and subsequent bleeding into or around the brain).
